Police have arrested a 32-year-old man, identified as Ohidul Molla, during a late-night raid on Monday in Natore’s Lalpur upazila for his alleged involvement in a cyber fraud and mobile phone hacking network.
Ohidul, son of Robbel Molla of Mohorkoya village in
Bilmaria Union of Lalpur, was arrested from the area. Police said he was
subsequently sent to court and a case was filed against him under the Cyber
Security Act.
Confirming the arrest, Lalpur Police Station
Officer-in-Charge Shafiqul Islam said Ohidul was allegedly known as the
“hacking king” of Bilmaria village, which has gained notoriety as a hub of IMO
hacking activities.
He allegedly operated a local hacking network, with
other members considering him their mentor.
According to police, Ohidul had adopted several
measures to conduct hacking activities and avoid arrest. He had installed at
least 20 CCTV cameras along the route from the main road to his house so that
he could detect police movement and flee if officers entered the area.
Police said Ohidul had converted a room inside his
walled house into what appeared from outside to be a pigeon coop, where
hundreds of pigeons were kept. A bed was also placed inside the room, which,
according to police, was used by Ohidul. The room was furnished with expensive
furniture, CCTV monitors and an air conditioner.
Police alleged that Ohidul used the room as a base
for hacking and taking control of other people’s mobile phones. He reportedly
used an expensive motorcycle for transportation.
During the raid, police recovered 68 SIM cards from
different mobile operators. The SIM numbers had been arranged in a chart on a
sheet of paper, with coded markings indicating which numbers were linked to services
such as bKash and Nagad.
Police said Ohidul was involved in various forms of
digital fraud.
OC Shafiqul Islam said Lalpur Police Station
Sub-Inspector Al Masum filed a case under the Cyber Security Act in connection
with the incident. Five alleged associates of Ohidul have also been named as
accused in the case.
Police said Ohidul was sent to jail through the court on Tuesday afternoon.
