A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent Maksuda Islam, the first wife of Satkhira-4 lawmaker and expelled Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Gazi Nazrul Islam, to jail in a case filed over the alleged abetment of the suicide of Nazrul’s second wife.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain passed the order after police produced her before the court following the completion of her remand.

Detective Branch of police Inspector Mohammad Salahuddin, also the investigating officer of the case, filed the detention plea, stating that important information was obtained from the accused during the interrogation.

The accused needed to be kept in jail custody in the interest of a fair and impartial investigation into the case, according to the petition.

On Monday, the court placed Maksuda Islam on one-day remand in the case, while Nazrul Islam was remanded for four days.

Nazrul’s second wife, Mariam Khatun, 19, was found hanging from the ceiling at a flat on the second floor of NAM Bhaban, a residential complex for lawmakers in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, on Sunday evening. The MP, along with his two wives, lived in the flat.

Later that night, Mariam’s father, Masum Billah, filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, accusing Gazi Nazrul and his first wife of abetting his daughter’s suicide.

Another accused named in the case is Mariam’s maternal uncle, Obaidur Rahman, who previously served as Nazrul’s driver.
