Police have arrested Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda Begum, in a case filed over the alleged abetment of suicide following the death of his second wife, Mariam Khatun.
Tejgaon
Division Deputy Commissioner Ibne Mizan confirmed the arrests around 1am on
Monday, saying the two were shown arrested in the case filed with Sher-e-Bangla
Nagar Police Station.
Earlier on
Sunday evening, police recovered the hanging body of Mariam, 19, from Flat 203
on the third floor of Building 5 at NAM Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. The body
was sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy after an
inquest. CID and PBI teams also collected evidence from the scene.
Police had
earlier taken Gazi Nazrul and his first wife into custody for questioning after
recovering the body.
The case was
filed by Mariam’s father Md Masum Billah, naming the MP, his first wife and
Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidullah as accused.
Gazi Nazrul
was elected from Satkhira-4 in the 13th parliamentary election with
Jamaat-e-Islami’s nomination. The party expelled him on 22 July following
controversy over a video involving him and Mariam that circulated on social
media.
