Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Abdul Moyeen Khan on Saturday urged officials of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) to prevent wastage of public resources and ensure their maximum use.

“Government officials are custodians of public resources. Therefore, accountability, proper planning and effective implementation must be ensured in every development project,” he said.

The minister made the remarks as the chief guest at a discussion on LGED’s development activities at the LGED Bhaban in the capital’s Agargaon.

Moin Khan said merely making plans on paper would not be enough, as their implementation was the most important aspect.

“Since the country’s resources are limited, we have to balance needs and capacity to achieve maximum results at minimum cost,” he said, stressing the need to implement plans based on public needs and realities at the grassroots level.

The minister said LGED had ushered in a new era in rural infrastructure development at the initiative of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, bringing significant changes to the country’s rural infrastructure.

He expressed hope that people would benefit from the development plans being implemented under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman over the next 20 to 30 years.

“The key to developing Bangladesh’s rural infrastructure and communities is in the hands of LGED officials,” he said, urging them to work together to implement the government’s development plans while prioritising the welfare of people at the grassroots.

State Minister for Local Government Mir Shah Alam attended the meeting as a special guest.

Speaking at the meeting, he said the use of bricks in rural road development should be reduced and the use of uni-blocks and concrete blocks increased.

He said these materials should be used instead of bricks on small roads six to nine feet wide, while RCC, carpeting and locally sourced stone should be used as required on roads carrying heavy vehicles.

He also instructed officials to use vetiver grass to prevent soil erosion along riverbanks and on flood-prone roads.

Local Government Division Secretary Md Shahidul Hasan, LGED Chief Engineer Md Belal Hossain, senior ministry officials, executive engineers from different districts, project directors of ongoing LGED projects and upazila engineers attended the meeting.
