The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Tuesday ordered the confiscation and sale of 50% of the movable and immovable assets of five accused, including banned Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, to compensate the families of those killed or injured during the July-August 2024 uprising.

The order came in the tribunal’s verdict in a case filed over crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising, in which seven Awami League leaders were sentenced to death.

The five are Obaidul Quader, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Mohammad Ali Arafat, Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash and Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil.

The tribunal ordered that proceeds from the sale of half of their assets be used to provide appropriate compensation to the victims or their families through the July Foundation or another statutory body.

The other two convicts sentenced to death are banned Chhatra League central president Saddam Hossain and general secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan.

All the accused are absconding.

Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said the government would implement the order and identify the accused’s assets for confiscation.

He said no action to confiscate the assets could be taken during the 30-day period allowed for appeal under the law.

“After 30 days, there will be no legal impediment to the Bangladesh government implementing the verdict,” he said.
