Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called on students to play an active role in protecting the environment, maintaining cleanliness and preventing dengue.
He
also urged them to undertake small, positive initiatives that can contribute to
bringing about positive change in the country.
He made the call while meeting students of Sunbeams School in front of the Prime Minister’s Office at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban at around 4:30pm on Wednesday.
The students of Sunbeams, an English-medium school in the capital, visited Parliament to learn about its proceedings and observe a parliamentary session.
The
Prime Minister met the students during the recess for Asr prayers while the
session was in progress. He enquired about their studies and health and
discussed their responsibilities in protecting the environment, maintaining
cleanliness, safeguarding public health and preventing the spread of dengue.
Outlining
the government’s plans for environmental protection, Tarique said, “We have
taken an initiative to plant 25 crore trees to make the country greener and
improve its environment. You should also take part in this initiative. You
should develop the habit of planting trees around your homes, educational
institutions and even the homes of your relatives. You can also give each other
trees as gifts on special occasions, whether it is your birthday or another
special day. We need to develop a culture of gifting trees.”
Citing the example of clean environments abroad, he said, “Those of you who have travelled abroad have surely seen how clean the environment is there. We also need to keep our country clean. You should help discourage people from throwing rubbish indiscriminately. If you see any of your friends or relatives making the environment dirty or throwing waste on the streets, ask them not to do so.”
Recalling
his experience of living in London, the Prime Minister said citizens there keep
their surroundings clean.
“If
we keep our homes and surroundings clean ourselves, it will be possible to keep
the entire country clean. Change must begin at home,” he said.
Urging people to take preventive measures against dengue, he said, “The risk of dengue remains high for the three months from September. So, preventive measures must be taken in advance. You must keep your homes and surroundings clean and make sure that water does not accumulate anywhere.”
The
Prime Minister also urged the students to undertake small initiatives that
could contribute to positive changes in society and the country.
“We will undertake small initiatives that will contribute to positive changes in society and the country. You should also take part in these efforts and help build a beautiful country,” he said.
The
students expressed their enthusiasm at meeting the Prime Minister and pledged
to respond to his call to contribute to positive change and build a clean and
green Bangladesh.
A
total of 124 students of Sunbeams School visited Parliament to observe its
proceedings and gain firsthand experience of a parliamentary session as part of
an initiative to encourage young people to take an interest in the country’s
future leadership. They were accompanied by 14 teachers.
