Ambassador Mushfiqul Fazal Ansarey has called for identifying and taking legal action against those involved in the attack on Bangladeshi actress and cultural activist Azmeri Haque Badhan in Italy.

In a post on his verified Facebook page, Ansarey, who is currently attached to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the attack should not be tolerated and urged the Bangladesh Embassy in Italy to seek cooperation from the Italian authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.

He said the victory of a “fascism-free Bangladesh” was achieved through the collective participation and sacrifices of political parties, students, farmers, workers, cultural activists and people from all walks of life.

Referring to the Awami League, whose activities have been banned, Ansarey said its “arrogant activities” and organised actions at home and abroad could not be accepted.

He described the attack on Badhan in Italy as an act of violence and called for those responsible to be identified and brought under the law.

Ansarey said he hoped the Bangladesh embassy in Italy would establish diplomatic communication with the relevant Italian authorities, provide them with information and evidence concerning the incident, and seek effective action against those involved.

“Ensuring that every Bangladeshi citizen travelling abroad feels safe and secure is part of our responsibility as embassies,” he said.

He also drew a comparison with the possible response if an Italian citizen visiting Bangladesh were subjected to a similar attack, saying the Italian mission’s efforts and immediate communication with relevant Bangladeshi authorities would likely have been visible.

Ansarey stressed that Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions should seek prompt remedies whenever Bangladeshis face such “uncivilised, violent and reprehensible” activities in any civilised country.
