A girl and a young woman drowned while taking a bath in a pond at Jagannath University’s (JnU) second campus in Keraniganj on Monday, said Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge (investigation) of South Keraniganj Police Station.

The deceased were identified as Julia, 20, wife of Shafiqul Islam, and Rabeya, 14, daughter of Atikur Rahman. Both were residents of Dakkhin Para in the Alukanda Stand Bazar area under South Keraniganj Police Station.

According to local sources, the two, along with others, went to the pond at around 3:00pm to take a bath but could not get out of the water. Local people later rescued them, but they had died by then.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Rezaul Karim of South Keraniganj Police Station said locals rescued the two at around 5:00pm, but they were already dead. Legal procedures regarding the bodies are underway.

Meanwhile, following the incident, the university authorities issued a notice banning public bathing and the use of the pond’s ghats. The notice warned that legal action would be taken against anyone entering or staying at the pond or using the ghats without permission.
