Unidentified assailants hacked and shot dead a local BNP leader at Atgharia upazila of Pabna on Monday afternoon.

The victim, Adam Ali Mollah, 60, was the president of BNP’s Ward No 01 Unit under Ekdanta Union and a former union parishad (UP) member.

The incident took place at Chandipasha village in Ekdanta Union at about 4:00pm, said police.

Police said Adam Ali was returning home from Ekdanta Bazar on a motorcycle. When he reached the Chandipasha area, unidentified assailants who had been lying in wait first opened fire on him.

Since he attempted to flee to save his life, the attackers chased him down, hacking and shooting him, and they fled when local residents rushed to the scene.

The victim’s cousin Alamgir Hossain said his relative’s son had called him about 15 days ago, saying several people had been threatening them.

“I believe those who issued the threats are behind this killing. I want proper justice for the murder,” he said.

Pabna Superintendent of Police Abu Ashraf said, “Our operation to identify the culprits is ongoing, and we hope to bring those responsible to justice very soon.”
