President
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday urged all the political parties to avoid
clashes and instead pursue discussions and mutual understanding for the greater
good of the country.
The
president made the remarks at a mass rally held at Thakurgaon Government Boys’
School, marking his first visit to his ancestral village since assuming the
role of the head of the state.
The rally
was originally planned as an eminent personality felicitation programme but
turned into a mass gathering with the participation of tens of thousands of people.
Speaking at
the event, the president said, “We have reclaimed democracy after a lot of
sacrifices. We do not wish to see bloodshed anymore.. we do not wish to lose
our hard-won democracy once again.”
“We wish
that even at the cost of our lives, we can keep working for preserving the
country’s independence, sovereignty and democratic principles.”
“Rather, we
wish to have a wonderful society, where communal harmony is preserved, as well
as the politics of mutual understanding.”
He also
stressed the need for creating employment prospects for improving people’s
well-being.
Mirza
Fakhrul also asked the youth to avoid chasing jobs and contractual works, and
rather urged them to stand on their own feet through self-employment. He also
called on the youth to actively and voluntarily contribute towards building a
wonderful society.
The
president highlighted ongoing works for constructing a medical college, a
public university and an airport in Thakurgaon. He would inaugurate the
foundation stone for the construction of the university on Monday, the final
day of his two-day tour to the district.
