A suspect in a case fled from police custody while wearing handcuffs and later went live on Facebook from a safe location, where he described how he was “made an accused.”

The incident took place at Damodhardupi village in Shantiganj upazila, Sunmaganj around 9pm on Wednesday, causing a stir in the area. Around two hours later, the accused, Asir Mia, 35, went live on Facebook and described the incident.

Police had not been able to arrest him until the filing of this report.

During his six-minute Facebook Live, the accused described how he was detained, how he escaped and why he and his three brothers had allegedly been made accused in a robbery case. He was seen wearing handcuffs during the live broadcast.

According to police sources, an operation team led by Shantiganj Police Station Sub-Inspector Nur Uddin, along with other police personnel, arrested Asir Mia, an accused in a case, at Damodhardupi Point around 9pm on Wednesday. While he was being taken into police custody, he seized an opportunity and fled. He was reportedly wearing handcuffs at the time.

Following his escape from police custody while wearing handcuffs, several teams of Shantiganj police have been conducting drives and searches at different locations to apprehend him.

Mohammad Azir Uddin, a resident of Damodhardupi village and a UP member, said Asir Mia fled wearing the police handcuffs when a commotion broke out during his arrest, giving him an opportunity to escape.

Shantiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Oli Ullah said police were conducting an operation to arrest the accused after he fled from police custody. "I have come to the scene to find out what actually happened," he said.

Sunamganj Additional Superintendent of Police (DSB) Sujon Sarker said he was not aware of the matter. "If such an incident has occurred, it is also being looked into," he said.
