Newly appointed Judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court Justice Md Habibul Gani has pledged to discharge his constitutional responsibilities with impartiality and the utmost sincerity, saying there is no scope for negligence or bias in the administration of justice.
He was speaking at a reception accorded to him soon
after taking oath as an SC judge on Sunday.
The Attorney General’s Office and the Supreme Court
Bar Association (SCBA) arranged the event where Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman
Chowdhury, judges of the Appellate Division, senior advocates, and legal
professionals were present.
Delivering his inaugural address, Justice Gani
expressed deep gratitude to Almighty Allah, the president, and the chief justice
for his elevation to the apex court. He paid homage to the martyrs of the 1952
Language Movement, the 1971 Liberation War, and democratic movements throughout
the nation's history.
Recalling those who had shaped his professional and
personal life, the new Appellate Division judge paid tribute to his late
parents and his professional mentors, including senior lawyers who had guided
him during his career.
Justice Gani urged newly enrolled lawyers to remain
focused on their profession, saying academic qualifications or foreign degrees
alone could not ensure success in litigation without proper concentration and
dedication.
Emphasising the importance of public confidence in
the justice system, he said that a litigant first places trust in a lawyer and
hands over all relevant documents and information to that lawyer. Lawyers
therefore have a responsibility to properly evaluate that trust.
Earlier, Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury
administered the oath to him in the mooning at the Supreme Court Judges’
Lounge.
On 27 August, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir
appointed Justice Habibul Gani, a judge of the High Court Division, to the
Appellate Division.
With his elevation, the Appellate Division now has
five judges, including Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury.
Justice Habibul Gani was enrolled as an advocate of
the District Court on 3 April 1989, and of the High Court Division on 11 April
1992.
He was appointed an additional judge of the High
Court Division on 18 April 2010, and made a permanent judge on 15 April 2012.
Born on 31 May 1962, Justice Md Habibul Gani
obtained MSS and LLB degrees from Chittagong University.
