A case has been filed against 10 named people and 20 to 25 unidentified individuals over an alleged attack on a lawyer on the Dhaka court premises after he completed proceedings in a case on 25 August.

Victim lawyer Md Mohaiminul Islam Khan filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque on Thursday under the Law and Order Disruption (Speedy Trial) Act, 2002.

The court ordered Kotwali Police Station to register the case as an FIR within 24 hours, said complainant and victim lawyer Mohaiminul Islam Khan.

The accused are—Umm-e-Hafsa Tanbi, Humayun Kabir, Md Ashraful Alam Khan and Mahabub Alam Khan. They were allegedly the instigators of the attack.

The other accused include Shahadat Hossain, Jidan Hang, Md Mohibullah, Raihan, Khaled Saifullah Naim and Arman Hossain. They were allegedly hired goons involved in the attack.

According to the case statement, the attack took place around 11:45am on the day when the lawyer was heading towards his chamber with his clients after completing proceedings as a defence lawyer in a dowry case.

The accused allegedly launched a pre-planned and organised attack on them when they reached the road in front of the court lock-up.

The complaint alleged that the accused attacked the lawyer with an intention to kill him and repeatedly punched, kicked and hit him indiscriminately on different parts of his body, including his head and face.

As the lawyer and others screamed for help, pedestrians and several lawyers rushed to the spot and rescued them. Later, with the help of people present there, six of the accused were allegedly caught red-handed and taken to the Dhaka Bar Association, while the other alleged attackers fled the scene.

The complaint further alleged that after the accused were taken to the Dhaka Bar Association, the other attackers who had fled the scene returned with another 20 to 25 unidentified people and entered the third floor of the association’s main building.
