Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has pledged to transform Bangladesh’s police force into a people-friendly force that meets public expectations.
“Insha'Allah, this police force of Bangladesh will become a people-friendly force that meets the expectations of the people,” he said while addressing a discussion and prayer programme organised by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) at its Nayapaltan office in Dhaka to mark Eid-e-Miladunnabi (SAW).
Salahuddin, also a member of the BNP Standing Committee, said legal frameworks governing other law enforcement agencies were being amended to strengthen accountability.
“Their accountability is being ensured. Transparency in their activities will also be ensured,” he said.
Referring to a recent incident in Rangpur, he said those responsible had been brought under the law within a reasonable period after the incident took place.
“From the Ramisa murder to every nationally discussed incident, we have been able to address each crime, bring those responsible under the law and produce them before the courts,” he said.
The minister said the government had taken action against those involved in major criminal incidents within a relatively short period.
“I do not think it is reasonable to expect much more than this within such a short period,” he added.
