The
Ministry of Liberation War Affairs is set to form a new directorate dedicated
toward ensuring the rehabilitation, medical treatment and legal protection of
families affected by extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances perpetrated
by the Awami League regime.
The
ministry announced the formation of the upcoming directorate in a press release
on Sunday.
On Sunday, Liberation
War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan convened an inter-ministerial meeting to
this end.
State Minister Ishraque Hossain and Secretary Ashraful Alam were present in the meeting, among others.
In the
meeting, Ahmed Azam Khan said the state has recognised the sacrifices of those
who took part in the July-August 2024 uprising, and formed a separate “July Mass
Uprising Directorate.”
In the same
way, the state also wants to recognise the immense sacrifices political
activists made through a lengthy movement for restoring democracy in the
country.
A number of
people were brutally killed, never returned to their families following
extrajudicial killings, lost eyesight, were maimed or crippled, and spent years
in jail in hundreds of false lawsuits, the minister said.
The new
department for these people are aimed at forging a lasting resistance against any
future attempt by a potential fascist force to rob masses of their democratic
rights and to subject victims to medieval-style barbarity.
