Dr Zubaida Rahman, Vice-President of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation, has inaugurated a day-long free eye-care programme for underprivileged people living in Bhashantek, Korail and Sattola slum areas of the capital.
The programme offered free eye examinations, cataract screening, medical consultations and services related to cataract surgery.
The information was confirmed by Md Sujandaulla (Sujon Mahmud), Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister.
BNP Standing Committee member and Executive Director of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation Prof Dr Farhad Halim Donar; Prof Shah Muhammad Amanullah, orthopaedic surgeon, Foundation Director (Programmes) and an official at the Prime Minister’s Office; Foundation Director (Programmes) Engineer Md Mahbub Alam; Director (Programmes) Dr Khandaker Mahfuzul Haque Bacchu; Director Engineer AKM Zahirul Islam; life member Rezaur Rahman Chowdhury Sumon; Dr Saeed Mehebub Kadir and Sohel Ahmed were among those present, along with doctors, officials and volunteers involved in the initiative.
Around 1,000 underprivileged women, men and children from Bhashantek, Korail and Sattola received free eye examinations, medical advice and necessary healthcare services.
Medicines and spectacles were provided to patients based on doctors’ recommendations. Those diagnosed with cataracts were also identified and arrangements were made for free surgery where necessary.
Dr Zubaida Rahman’s presence and inauguration of the programme generated enthusiasm among patients, doctors, volunteers and local residents participating in the initiative.
The organisers said many low-income people were unable to receive necessary eye care on time because of financial hardship. The initiative was therefore undertaken to make free treatment available, particularly to people suffering from cataracts and vision-related problems.
They said the programme was organised out of a sense of humanitarian responsibility to ensure that no one was deprived of essential eye care because of financial constraints.
The Ziaur Rahman Foundation will continue its public welfare activities, including healthcare and other humanitarian initiatives for underprivileged communities, the organisers said.
Patients and local residents who received treatment expressed their gratitude to the organisers for arranging the free healthcare programme.
