The National University has approved a policy to form subject-based pools of part-time teachers to help address the shortage of teachers at its affiliated colleges.
The pools will include qualified and experienced
retired teachers as well as experts with expertise in relevant subjects,
according to decisions taken at the 103rd meeting of the university’s Academic
Council held on Saturday at its main campus in Gazipur.
The meeting, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr ASM
Amanullah, also approved several important decisions aimed at making students’
education and future careers more effective, relevant and timely.
The council also decided to give students who failed
in one or more subjects in the four-year honours programmes from the 2013-14 to
2017-18 academic sessions another opportunity to sit for the examinations on
special consideration.
The university also approved the inclusion of
freelancing courses graphic design, video editing and web design as well as
culinary science (chef) and human resource management in its skill-based
postgraduate diploma programme.
To ensure quality education, a four-credit Applied
ICT course has been introduced for second-year students of degree (pass) and
honours programmes, while Functional English has been introduced for first-year
students. The syllabuses and regulations for the courses were also approved.
The university believes the initiatives will help
address the teacher shortage while ensuring regular and quality teaching for
students. They are also expected to contribute to skills-based and job-oriented
education, technology-driven learning and the overall improvement of higher
education.
The meeting also discussed the certificates of
students who complete the three-year degree (pass) course and the one-year
master’s preliminary course, following demands for allowing them to participate
in Bangladesh Civil Service and other Public Service Commission examinations.
In principle, it was decided that four-year degree
certificates and master’s preliminary certificates would be treated as
equivalent to four-year degrees. A high-level committee will be formed to
communicate with the relevant government authorities for final approval.
The council also discussed providing students with
CGPAs below 2.25 an opportunity to sit for improvement examinations on special
consideration so that they do not drop out of higher education.
Besides, regulations for affiliation of four-year
LLB (Honours) programmes at colleges affiliated with the National University
were approved.
The meeting also approved the university’s mission
and vision, marking the determination of its specific goals and objectives for
the first time in 34 years.
