Severe traffic jam has gripped Dhaka Airport road due to disorderly vehicle movement and widespread violations of traffic rules, causing major inconvenience for thousands of office-bound commuters.
At around 8:30am on Sunday (2 August), traffic was seen stretching from Kuril Bishwaroad to Banani-Kakoli. On the other side, a long queue of vehicles extended from the Matikata Flyover to ECB Chattar.
On-site observations showed buses picking up and dropping off passengers indiscriminately in the Kuril Bishwaroad area. At the same time, drivers entering the Kuril Flyover and those heading towards the airport were ignoring lane discipline, worsening the congestion.
Although traffic remained relatively smooth on the airport-bound section from Kuril, the disruption created a severe backlog on connecting roads.
Long tailbacks were reported from Banani-Kakoli to Kuril and along the Matikata Flyover from ECB Chattar to Kurmitola General Hospital.
Office-bound commuters were left stranded in the gridlock for hours, enduring significant delays and hardship.
Saiful Islam, a private-sector employee, said successive governments had failed to restore order on the city's roads.
He noted that much of the congestion could be avoided if buses stopped only at designated locations to pick up and drop off passengers and drivers strictly followed lane discipline.
