The High Court has disposed of more than 50,000 long-pending cases in just 10 working days under a special initiative aimed at reducing the judicial backlog.
Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Md Shafiqul Islam said on Thursday that 7,565 old criminal miscellaneous cases were disposed of by 14 criminal motion benches on the day alone.
Since the initiative was launched, a total of 43,357 old criminal miscellaneous cases have been disposed of over 10 working days, with one day each week dedicated to hearing backlog cases. Including old writ petitions, the total number of long-pending cases disposed of has reached 50,264.
The special drive is being carried out under the directives of Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, with priority being given to the disposal of long-pending cases before the criminal and writ motion benches of the High Court Division.
The initiative, launched on 7 May this year, aims to ensure quicker justice for litigants, reduce the backlog of cases and improve the efficiency of the judicial system.
The special drive to dispose of long-pending cases will continue, the Supreme Court official said.
