National University (NU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr ASM Amanullah has announced the formation of cyber security clubs at affiliated colleges across the country to raise awareness about cybercrime and equip students with up-to-date knowledge on cyber security.
He made the announcement while addressing a seminar
on cyber security as the chief guest at Lalmatia Government Women's College in
the capital on Sunday. During the programme, he also inaugurated the college's
Cyber Security Club.
The awareness seminar, titled "Staying Safe
Online: Protect Yourself From Cybercrimes," was organised by the Cyber
Security Club of the Institute of Forensic Science and Cyber Security under the
National University.
Addressing the seminar, the vice-chancellor said
cybercrime has become increasingly sophisticated with the rapid advancement of
technology. Online fraud, data theft, identity theft, financial scams and the
misuse of social media are creating new risks for individuals and society.
"A country's digital progress becomes
meaningful only when its citizens are able to use technology safely and
responsibly," he said, adding that young people need not only
technological skills but also a sound understanding of cyber ethics, data
protection and responsible digital behaviour.
He said most people become victims of cybercrime due
to a lack of awareness and stressed the need for regular seminars, workshops
and training programmes at educational institutions to build a safe digital
environment for students.
"There is no alternative to ensuring cyber
security if we are to fully benefit from technology," he said.
Urging students to remain vigilant online, Prof
Amanullah advised them to avoid sharing personal information carelessly,
refrain from responding to suspicious links or messages, use strong passwords
and enable two-factor authentication.
He said an aware generation can play a vital role in
building a cybercrime-free and digitally secure Bangladesh.
The seminar was chaired by Lalmatia Government
Women's College Principal Prof Sultana Mahmuda Yasmin.
NU Registrar Molla Mahfuz Al-Hossain attended as the
special guest.
Cyber security expert Tanvir Hasan Zoha and
Bangladesh Police Staff College Director (Training) Md Mahbubul Alam presented
keynote papers on cyber security awareness.
The welcome address was delivered by Prof Dr
Mohammad Bin Kashem, head of the Institute of Forensic Science and Cyber
Security.
The event was supervised by Cyber Security Club
President Md Mohibul Hasan and Secretary Md Delowar Hossain Sami.
