Police have arrested four people on Wednesday in connection with a robbery at a flat in the capital's Kamrangirchar area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)'s deputy commissioner of police (Lalbagh Division) Muhammad Talebur Rahman, shared this information at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Wednesday.
The arrested are Jesmin (37), Sajib Alam (29), Ripon Mia (42) and Faruk Khan (50).
Talebur Rahman said, the robbery took place between 7:25pm and 7:50pm on Saturday at a flat on the fifth floor of a 10-storey building in Mahdi Nagar area near Roksi Goli.
Five robbers entered the flat pretending to be tenants looking for a house. Then they tied up and assaulted three women before fleeing with about Tk2 million in cash, three bhori of gold ornaments and four mobile phones.
He said police reviewed CCTV footage and used intelligence information to identify the suspects. Sajib was arrested from Muslimbagh early Wednesday.
Based on his information, police arrested Ripon and recovered Tk1 lakh from a wardrobe drawer at his house.
Police later arrested Faruk from the Chand Mosque area and recovered another Tk1 lakh in cash and the looted gold ornaments from his rented house.
The DC added that police found during interrogation that the robbery was planned by Jesmin, who lived on the seventh floor of the same building. Police arrested her on Wednesday and recovered Tk20,000 from her possession.
According to police, Jesmin regularly visited the victims' flat and knew they kept a large amount of cash there.
She planned the robbery with several people she knew. On the day of the incident, she received the robbers at the building and helped them leave safely after the robbery. She later returned to the flat to console the victims and even became a witness in the case.
Talebur Rahman said eight people were involved in the robbery. Legal action against the arrested is underway, while drives are continuing to arrest the remaining suspects.
