A Dhaka tribunal on Tuesday sentenced three men to life imprisonment for the rape of a young woman committed 24 years ago in Nawabganj upazila of the capital.
The convicts are Sujon, Julhas and Mahammad. The court also fined each of them Tk1 lakh, with an additional one year’s simple imprisonment in default of payment.
The tribunal directed the district magistrate or collector to realise the fine by selling the convicts' movable and immovable properties, if necessary, and pay the money to the victim or her family.
Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 delivered the verdict, said State Prosecutor Md Ershad Alam (George).
According to court sources, convicts Sujon and Mahammad were present when the judgment was delivered, and the tribunal sent them to jail to serve their sentences. The court issued a conviction warrant and an arrest warrant against absconding convict Julhas.
According to the case documents, the accused took the victim to a boro paddy field at Gorbakanda in Sonapur after she had gone to an outdoor toilet on 22 March 2002.
The accused then raped her and threatened her not to disclose the incident. The victim later filed a case with Nawabganj Police Station after surviving the assault.
Police later submitted the charge sheet against the three accused on 18 July 2002. During the trial, the tribunal examined seven prosecution witnesses before delivering the verdict.
