Police recovered the body of a 30-year-old man from his home in Bheramara upazila of Kushtia on Monday morning after he reportedly had an argument with his wife over returning home late following the FIFA World Cup final.
The deceased was identified as Sumon Hossain, son of Afzal Hossain, a resident of Bahirchar Union in the upazila.
According to police and local sources, Sumon returned home in the early hours of Monday after watching the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain. His wife reportedly questioned him about his late return, which led to an argument.
Speaking to locals, Sumon's wife said she only asked him, "Is this the time to come home?" after he returned from watching the match.
She said Sumon later left the house again while she went to sleep. In the early morning, she discovered him hanging inside the house and raised the alarm.
Local resident Abdul Jalil said he heard cries from the house after returning from Fajr prayers at around 5:30am. He and another neighbour entered the house, brought Sumon down and called a local doctor, who declared him dead.
Muhammad Jahedur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bheramara Police Station, said the death appeared to be a case of suicide based on preliminary findings. However, he said the exact circumstances and motive behind the incident are yet to be confirmed, and an investigation is underway.
