Security has been stepped up across Gopalganj, with five platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) deployed to prevent any untoward incidents ahead of the first anniversary of last year's deadly clashes.

The BGB personnel began patrolling key roads and strategic locations across the district on Wednesday morning. They are conducting joint patrols alongside members of the Bangladesh Police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

The heightened security comes ahead of 16 July, marking one year since violent clashes erupted in Gopalganj during a march organised by the National Citizen Party (NCP). Five people were killed in the confrontation between law enforcers and activists of the Awami League.

Gopalganj Deputy Commissioner Md Arif-Uz-Zaman confirmed the deployment of the BGB.

He said law enforcement agencies remain fully prepared to deal with any attempt to create disorder or disrupt law and order in the district.

According to law enforcement officials and local sources, the additional security measures have been taken amid concerns that the anniversary of last year's violence could trigger fresh tensions or other untoward incidents.

The district administration, in coordination with security agencies, has therefore adopted enhanced precautionary measures to maintain peace and ensure public safety across Gopalganj.
