The capital recorded its highest rainfall in nearly 17 years on Sunday, leaving large parts of the city waterlogged and causing severe disruption to daily life.
Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque said Dhaka received 175mm of
rainfall in the 24 hours until Sunday, the highest recorded in the capital
since 2009.
The previous highest 24-hour rainfall was recorded during the 2009
monsoon season, when the city received 333mm of rain.
Haque attributed the heavy rainfall to an active monsoon over
Bangladesh, adding that increased rainfall during the monsoon season is a
normal weather pattern.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, Chattogram
recorded 160mm of rainfall, Cox’s Bazar 113mm, Ambagan 140mm and Faridpur 111mm
during the same period.
The meteorologist said the active monsoon is likely to keep
rainfall widespread across the country over the next five days.
He added that Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chattogram and
Sylhet divisions could experience moderate to very heavy rainfall in some areas
during the period.
