The government is expected to announce the schedule for local government elections in mid-August, with Union Parishad polls likely to begin in the first half of October, Prime Minister's Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a press briefing on the government's activities at the Press Information Department (PID) conference room at the Secretariat, he said the Election Commission (EC) has prepared preliminary roadmaps for elections to Union Parishads, Upazila Parishads, municipalities and city corporations.

"The roadmaps are expected to be finalised and published by the end of this month," he said.

According to the adviser, the Election Commission plans to announce the election schedule in the second half of August, paving the way for Union Parishad elections to commence in early October.

Quoting the Election Commission, Zahed Ur Rahman said the country has been divided into four regions to facilitate the phased conduct of local government elections: the haor and northeastern region, the hill and coastal region, the riverine and char areas, and the plains and urban areas.

He said the election process will begin with Union Parishad polls in the haor and northeastern region, before being rolled out across the remaining areas.

Addressing public speculation over whether local government elections would be held, the adviser said the issue had attracted widespread attention after administrators were appointed to many local government bodies.

"We have repeatedly stated that local government elections will begin within this year. Elections require extensive preparation, and we prefer to hold the maximum number of polls during the dry and winter seasons," he said.

Zahed Ur Rahman expressed hope that if the election process begins in October this year, all local government elections across the country could be completed by around October next year.
