Supporters of BNP candidate Aslam Chowdhury staged demonstrations, putting up barricades on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway on Tuesday after the apex court cancelled his candidacy for the Chattogram-4 (Sitakunda and part of Chattogram city) constituency in the 13th parliamentary election.
From around 12 noon, the supporters blocked the highway at several places by felling trees and placing logs across the road, resulting in severe traffic congestion.
The party leaders and activists held processions and rallies in different areas, including Royal Cement Gate and Chhota Darogarhat, until the afternoon.
Later, the Highway Police removed the demonstrators from the highway and eased the vehicle movement in phases.
Sitakunda police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohinul Islam said the traffic on the highway returned to normal in the afternoon.
Earlier in the day, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court ruled that Aslam Chowdhury, who won the Chattogram-4 parliamentary seat in the 12 February general election, is not eligible to take the oath of office due to his status as a loan defaulter.
A bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury delivered the verdict.
As a result, the election result for the constituency cannot be officially declared.
