At least three people were killed and 30 others injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a leguna on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar Highway in Chattogram on Thursday night.

Many of the injured are in critical condition.

Locals rushed the injured to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for treatment, where the doctors pronounced three as dead, said the hospital police outpost's Sub-Inspector Alauddin Talukder.

Locals said that the accident took place around 9pm at Shikalbaha area of the Ctg-Cox's Bazar Highway in Karnaphuli upazila of Chattogram.

Some locals alleged that the bus of "Eagle Paribahan" transport company was running through the wrong route at an excessive speed.

The bus was bound for Satkania upazila of Cox's Bazar, while the leguna was bound for Moijjartek area of Chattogram.

In the head-on collision, the front part of the leguna was completely wrecked.

Patia Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Harun-ur-Rashid said the two vehicles have been seized, but the drivers of both have reportedly managed to flee.

Legal measures are underway over the road crash, he said.

The accident briefly disrupted vehicular movement in the area, but later police and locals removed the vehicles from the road and brought the traffic situation under control.
