Detective Branch (DB) arrested five members of an inter-district robbery gang along with illegal firearms, ammunition, explosives and motorcycles during a special operation in the capital’s Jatrabari area.

The arrestees were identified as Md Liton Jabbar, 52, Ismail Hossain Mamun, 55, Md Babul Babu, 45, Ayub Bhuiya, 30, and Md Roman, 35.

According to a police press release, the raid was carried out at around 4:50pm on Monday on Shahid Faruk Road between Dayaganj and Jatrabari under Jatrabari Police Station.

Officials from the DB’s Wari Division said the operation was launched following intelligence reports that members of an inter-district robbery ring were preparing to carry out a robbery in front of the Modern Bikalpa Wooden Furniture shop in the area.

During the drive, detectives seized two pistols, two magazines, seven rounds of ammunition, 2.2 kilograms of explosives, a machete and two motorcycles from the suspects.

During preliminary questioning, the accused reportedly admitted to collecting firearms, gunpowder and bomb-making materials from border areas of Jashore district over a long period.

Police said the group used the materials to manufacture crude bombs, which were later supplied to various criminal gangs in Dhaka.

Investigators also alleged that the gang carried out robberies by spreading panic with firearms and explosives. At the time of their arrest, they were reportedly planning another robbery.

Two separate cases have been filed with Jatrabari Police Station over the incident.
