Bangladesh has extended its annual financial support, in the
form of flexible funding, to the UNDP to support the global organisation’s
development initiatives across the world.
“By providing this flexible core funding contribution,
Bangladesh is helping deliver UNDP’s Strategic Plan across more than 170
countries and territories, supporting development efforts where they are needed
most,” the organisation said in a press release issued Wednesday.
The core contributions play a crucial role in strengthening
UNDP’s oversight and accountability functions, ensuring that programmes are
delivered effectively, efficiently, and transparently, it added.
The flexible funding is essential to addressing increasingly
complex global challenges and act quickly when crises emerge, it further said.
By extending the annual support, Bangladesh has “reaffirmed” its
commitment to multilateral cooperation and sustainable development, the UNDP said.
“Bangladesh
continues to pursue inclusive growth, climate resilience, and effective
governance – priorities that closely align with UNDP’s global mission.”
“We
deeply appreciate our five decades long partnership with Bangladesh, and their
contribution to UNDP core resources is a real testament to this”, said Kanni
Wignaraja, UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Asia
and the Pacific. “As Bangladesh advances its development goals, including
graduation from Least Developed Country status, its continued support to the
multilateralism underscores its commitment to advance global sustainable
development”.
Finance
Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhur said, “Bangladesh is proud to reaffirm its
commitment to multilateral cooperation and to supporting the global development
architecture, including through UNDP, our longstanding development partner
since independence in 1971. Our contribution to UNDP’s core resources reflects
the newly elected Government’s commitment to advancing sustainable development,
both at home and globally. We are also proud to share Bangladesh’s development
experience with countries across the Global South. We deeply value our
partnership with UNDP and look forward to further strengthening our
cooperation.”
