A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed former director of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), dismissed Lt Col Md Afzal Naser, on a three-day remand in an attempted murder case filed with Kotwali Police Station in connection with the anti-discrimination student movement.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid passed the order following a seven-day remand petition filed by police.

Earlier, Afzal was produced before the court and shown arrested in the case. Later, police sought a seven-day remand.

State Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon argued in favour of the remand, while defence counsel Zahidul Hasan pleaded for its cancellation and sought bail.

According to the remand petition, on 16 July 2024, students of Jagannath University brought out a procession as part of the anti-discrimination student movement.

When they reached Court House Street, activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations allegedly attacked them, using locally made weapons and firearms.

During the attack, Jagannath University student Anik Kumar Das was shot and seriously injured. He filed the case with Kotwali Police Station on 21 November 2024.

On 30 March this year, the Detective Branch of police arrested Afzal Naser in the capital’s Mirpur DOHS area. He has since been remanded multiple times in different cases.
