Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam announced on Sunday that the investigation into the 2013 Shapla Chattar killings is in its final stages, revealing that evidence of at least 32 murders has been uncovered in the capital alone.
Speaking to the media, the chief prosecutor stated
that the final investigation report is expected to be submitted by 7 June.
The announcement follows a previous ruling on 5
April, where a two-member judicial panel of the International Crimes
Tribunal-1, led by its Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumdar, granted a
two-month extension for the submission of the probe report.
The investigation was initiated following a formal
complaint filed with the Chief Prosecutor’s office by Azizul Haque, a leader of
Hefazat-e-Islam.
The complaint, filed on behalf of Hefazat leaders
Junayed Al Habib and Maulana Mamunul Haque, accuses 21 individuals, including
former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, of involvement in the events of 5 May
2013.
The crackdown occurred when security forces moved to
disperse thousands of Hefazat-e-Islam activists who had gathered at the capital's
Shapla Chattar to press for their 13-point demand. While official figures at
the time were disputed, the current tribunal investigation is now documenting
specific instances of fatalities to build a formal legal case.
