Police arrested a leader of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League and a microbus driver during a flash protest march at Dhaka University on Saturday.
The arrests occurred around 6:30am near the Raju Sculpture,
adjacent to the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC).
The detainees have been identified as Farhan Tanveer
Nasif, a student of the 2019-20 academic session and organising secretary of
the Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of BCL, and Rubel, the driver of a microbus.
Witnesses reported that a group of 10 to 12
individuals gathered suddenly at the base of the Raju Sculpture in the early
morning. The group conducted a brief march and displayed banners before
attempting to flee the scene in a black microbus.
Police intercepted the vehicle and took the two
individuals into custody. They were subsequently moved to Shahbag Police
Station for interrogation.
University Proctor Prof Saifuddin Ahmed confirmed
that one of the detainees is a current student of the university.
Masud Alam, deputy police commissioner of the Ramna
Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, stated that law enforcement is currently
verifying Nasif’s involvement in any previous criminal activities. He added
that authorities may file a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act if necessary.
