13 receive Dean’s Award at RU

The Faculty of Social Science of the University of Rajshahi honoured 13 teachers and students with its maiden Dean’s Award on Thursday.

The award was handed over at a ceremony held in the afternoon at the university’s Senate Building, where the recipients were given flowers, crests, certificates and cheques.

Awards were given in four categories this year. Ten students, each securing the highest CGPA in the 2023 undergraduate (honours) examinations from their departments. Three teachers also received awards in the “Best Article,” “Best Book,” and “Best Researcher” categories.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Faridul Islam attended the programme as the chief guest.

The student awardees are: Rifaha Rafia Bari from Mass Communication and Journalism, Nafisa Yasmin from Economics, Barsha Rani Mondal from Political Science, Antara from Social Work, Sanzida Farzana from Sociology, Raziya Sultana Parul from Information Science and Library Management, Mumtaz Farzana Tithi from Public Administration, Jannatul Mawa Shin from Anthropology, Trisha Das from Folklore and Social Development Studies and Ashraful Khan Faisal from International Relations.

Among the teachers, Associate Prof Md Arman Hossain from Information Science and Library Management received the “Best Article” award, Prof Md. Awal Hossain Mollya from Public Administration and Dr Pranab Kumar Panday were honoured in the “Best Book” and “Best Researcher” categories respectively.

Former deans of the faculty were also recognised with honorary crests at the ceremony.

According to university sources, the Faculty of Social Sciences began its journey in 1985 with four departments—Economics, Political Science, Social Welfare (now Social Work), and Sociology. Over time, it has expanded to 10 departments under the University of Rajshahi.

The idea of introducing a Dean’s Award was first taken up in 2014 through a committee of deans, but it remained inactive for years.

RU Pro-VC and acting dean of Social Science Faculty Prof Farid Uddin Khan presided over the ceremony. RU Pro-VC Prof Md Main Uddin, Former VC Prof Mizanuddin, former Islamic University VC Prof Rofiqul Islam, Treasurer Prof Matiur Rahman and former Social Science deans and hundreds of students were present at the ceremony.
