A Dhaka court on Thursday placed former DGFI director and dismissed Lt Col Md Afzal Naser on a four-day remand in a case filed over the killing of Mahmudul Hasan during the July student-mass uprising.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate
Sefatullah passed the order after police produced Naser before the court and
sought a seven-day remand in the case.
State prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the
matter and said the court showed him arrested in the case and placed him on a
four-day remand. “The accused was a key actor behind the 1/11 government and
was a close associate of Moeen U Ahmed,” he said.
According to the remand application, during the
anti-discrimination student movement, widespread violent activities were
carried out under the direction of the accused to suppress the protest.
Sufficient evidence has been found in this regard, and the remand is necessary
to interrogate him thoroughly, the application adds.
Earlier on 30 March, Afzal Naser was arrested by the
Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from Mirpur DOHS. Since
then, he has been placed on remand several times in multiple cases.
According to the case statement, Mahmudul Hasan
joined the anti-discrimination student movement on 5 August 2024. He was shot
dead when armed assailants allegedly opened fire on the protesters. A murder
case was later filed by his family with Uttara East Police Station.
