The Bangladesh Coast Guard seized around 4,000 litres of illegal fuel oil during a drive in Daulatkhan upazila of Bhola on Monday night.
The operation was carried out in the Meghna River near the Chokighat area, officials said.
Lt Commander Sabbir Alam Suzan, media officer of the Coast Guard South Zone, confirmed the development.
Acting on a tip-off, a Coast Guard team searched a trawler in the river and recovered the fuel. However, those on board fled the scene after sensing the presence of law enforcement, and no arrests were made.
A mobile court, led by Daulatkhan Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Shaon Majumder Suman, later sold the seized fuel at market price and deposited the proceeds into the government treasury.
