BNP candidates won in both the national parliament elections held on Thursday,
according to results announced by the concerned returning officers.
Ruling party candidate Rezaul Karim Badsha has been declared
winner in the by-election to the Bogura-6 constituency, while another party member Mahmudul Haque
Rubel clinched the Sherpur-3 parliamentary seat.
Sherpur-3 election
Returning Officer Md Jahangir Hossain announced Mahmudul
Haque Rubel as the winner on Thursday night.
The vote casting took place in a proper and stable
atmosphere, said Jahangir Hossain. There were some incidents of fraud voting,
but the perpetrators were caught promptly and handed over to the police, the
election official added.
Mahmudul has got 1,66,07 votes in the total 128 polling
centres. His nearest rival, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Masudur Rahman, has
bagged 47,051 votes, trailing by 1,18,966 votes. Bangladesh Socialist Party
(Marxist) candidate Mizanur Rahman won 480 votes.
Earlier, the returning officer’s office said voter turnout
throughout the day was 50.52%.
Around 3:15pm, Masudur announced his withdrawal from the
election alleging intimidation of his agents and violent attacks by ruling
party activists. Ruling party activists also engaged in fraud vote casting amid
lukewarm response from law enforcers, Masudur alleged at a press conference.
Voting was slated to be held in the seat along with the rest
of constituencies on 12 February. However, the Election Commission halted
election preparations following the sudden death of an election candidate.
Bogura-6
Bogura District Election Official and Returning Officer
Fazlur Karim declared Rezaul Karim Badsha winner on Thursday night. Voting took
place in a peaceful atmosphere without any untoward incident taking place, he
added.
Earlier around 4pm, Jamaat-e-Islami backed-candidate Abidur
Rahman Sohel alleged that ruling party activists took part in widespread
rigging activities during the vote casting process.
The published results showed BNP’s Rezaul Karim Badsha
clinching total 1,33,215 votes in 150 polling centres. His nearest rival,
Abidur Rahman Sohel, got 56,904 votes.
Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman won the
parliamentary seat in the 12 February general elections. However, later he
vacated the seat and opted to retain Dhaka-17 constituency, where he had beaten
the Jamaat candidate by a close margin.
