A Dhaka court on Monday granted six-day remand for former DGFI director, Lt Col Md Afzal Naser, over a murder during the July Uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasib Ullah Piyas gave the
order in response to a petition filed by the investigation officer, Detective
Branch (DB) Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin.
According to the remand application, in the afternoon on 19 July 2024, victim
Delwar Hossain, 40, was present in Falpatti area in Mirpur-10 in
support of the student-led job quota reform movement.
At that time, the individuals accused in the case,
along with 500 to 700 unnamed activists affiliated with the ruling Awami
League, opened indiscriminate fire under the direction of Afzal
Naser, the case statement adds.
Delwar was shot during the incident and collapsed at the
scene. He was later taken to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases
in critical condition. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred the
following day, 20 July, to City Care General Hospital in Shyamoli for better
treatment, where he died on 21 July while undergoing treatment. Following the
incident, the victim’s family filed the case.
The remand petition also stated that the preliminary
investigation found sufficient evidence of the suspect’s involvement in the
incident. Police said a seven-day remand is necessary to interrogate Afzal
Naser thoroughly to uncover the main mystery of the case and ensure a proper
investigation.
Earlier, on Monday, Members of the Detective Branch (DB) of
Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Afzal Naser from a house at Road No-12 in
Mirpur DOHS.
