The government has announced a reward of up to Tk100,000 for individuals who provide reliable information on illegal fuel hoarding and smuggling, in a move aimed at stabilising the country’s fuel supply and market conditions.

The announcement was made on Monday in a statement issued by the Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, which said the initiative is part of broader efforts to tackle artificial shortages created by unscrupulous businessmen and organised groups.

According to the ministry, individuals who assist local administration with credible and verifiable information about illegal stockpiling or smuggling will be eligible for the financial reward. Authorities have also assured that the identity of informants will remain strictly confidential.

The government noted that despite increasing fuel supply in recent weeks, the situation has not improved as expected due to panic buying and illegal hoarding.

Chairman of the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation, Md Rezanur Rahman, said fuel supply was significantly increased in early March but demand still outpaced distribution.

“From 1 to 5 March, we supplied more than 24,000 metric tonnes of fuel per day, compared to 12,700 metric tonnes during the same period last year. Even then, we could not stabilise the situation,” he said.

He explained that panic-driven purchasing by consumers, coupled with illegal hoarding by certain groups, disrupted the supply chain and created pressure in the market. As a result, fuel supply had to be brought back to normal levels from 6 March.

Later, supply was increased again by up to 25% ahead of Eid, but the situation showed little improvement, he added.

Strict monitoring and enforcement

To address the crisis, the government has strengthened monitoring mechanisms across the country. Vigilance teams have been formed in each district to oversee fuel distribution and identify irregularities.

Additionally, “tag officers” appointed at fuel stations to monitor allocation and ensure that the quantity supplied matches official records.

Authorities said enforcement drives are ongoing nationwide, with penalties including fines and imprisonment being imposed on those found involved in illegal activities.

Public cooperation sought

The government has urged citizens to come forward with information, emphasising that public participation is key to preventing market manipulation and ensuring a steady fuel supply.

Officials said the reward scheme is expected to encourage greater transparency and accountability in the fuel distribution system while deterring illegal hoarding and smuggling.
