Child among five killed as train runs over people in Tangail

Five people were crushed and killed when a train ran over them in Kalihati upazila, Tangail on Friday.

The deceased include a child, two women and two men, said Rezaul Karim, in-charge at the Gharinda Railway Station in Tangail. He could not provide the names of the victims, but said they all hailed from Gaibandha.

They could belong to the same family, but proper verification is needed for confirmation, the officer said.

According to eyewitnesses, a Dhaka-bound passenger bus ran out of fuel and stopped near the railway crossing at the Dhalatengar area of Kalihati upazila.

Afterwards, to pass spare time, five passengers got off from the bus and sat down on the rail tracks along the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge Highway. At one point, a Dhaka-bound train, Sirajganj Express, ran over them, leaving them dead on the spot.
