Referring to the Great Liberation War of 1971, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s daughter Zaima Rahman has said that any great goal can be achieved if people stand united.

She made the remark in a post on her Facebook page on Thursday night.

Zaima wrote, “I have always been deeply interested in various historical topics. History has taught me many lessons, and I would like to share one such instance with you.”

Referring to 26 March 1971, she said that in the darkness of that night, the invading army carried out widespread genocide, targeted sexual violence, and horrific and premeditated attacks aimed at the very future of the Bengali nation. One might have expected the people of Bangladesh to have broken under such terror.

“But they did not. The confidence and the unyielding desire for independence among Bangladeshis remained intact.”

Ordinary people—students, workers, homemakers, farmers—all chose the path of struggle for freedom, she said. “The free nation we live in today is a reflection of that very courageous decision.”

Zaima wrote, “And the heroes of our Liberation War are not distant historical figures—they were our own: grandfathers and grandmothers, neighbours, teachers—people who, as living examples, showed us how conviction and responsibility for one’s ideals can lead to victory.

“History has taught us that any great goal can be achieved when we stand united. The 1971 Liberation War is the finest example of this.”

She said, “We may not be on a battlefield today, but our responsibility in nation-building remains the same. So, what are we fighting for today?

“And cannot we honour the fearless heroes of the 1971 Liberation War by building a united and prosperous Bangladesh?”
