State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Aminul Haque has clarified recent discussions regarding Zaima Rahman’s passion for football and her opportunity to play for Chelsea’s age-group team, saying his statements are being misrepresented on social media.
Speaking to the media, Aminul explained that Zaima
played football while attending school in London, which led to her opportunity
to join Chelsea’s youth team as a goalkeeper.
He said he personally heard from Prime Minister
Tarique Rahman that Zaima had experience as a goalkeeper during her school
years.
The state minister added that while she had the
opportunity to play in Chelsea’s youth team during her school days, her
parents, Tarique Rahman and Dr Zubaida Rahman, encouraged her to prioritise her
studies.
Recalling a personal encounter, Aminul said that
when Zaima visited Mirpur to watch a cricket match, they reminisced about
goalkeeping. He quoted her saying, “Uncle, I used to be a goalkeeper in school
like you,” highlighting her skill in the position due to her height and
aptitude.
Aminul emphasised that in Europe, balancing sports
and education is an important part of a child’s development. He added that while
Zaima loved sports, she ultimately focused on her education in accordance with
her family’s wishes.
The minister clarified the matter to address
misunderstandings that had arisen on social media regarding Zaima’s involvement
in Chelsea’s youth team.
