Indian police have arrested another suspect in connection with the murder of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi in Dhaka.
The Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal police has arrested Philip Sangma, suspected to be a key middleman who facilitated illegal border crossings of two other key accused – Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Hossain, reports India Today.
Meanwhile, diplomatic sources said Philip was apprehended on Saturday in Shantipur of Nadia district, and the West Bengal police formally informed the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata about the matter.
Philip is a resident of Haluaghat upazila in Mymensingh.
In a press release issued by the West Bengal police, the STF arrested Philip acting on a tip-off.
During primary interrogation, he admitted that he helped Faisal and Alamgir intrude into India through the Meghalaya border. Later, to avoid arrest in Bangladesh, he himself entered India illegally.
The STF said Philip was produced before a court after arrest, and is now being interrogated, taking him into police custody.
In the early hours of 8 March, the STF arrested Faisal and his associate Alamgir in the Bongaon area of West Bengal.
One of the leaders of the July Uprising and a prospective independent candidate for the 13th parliamentary election from Dhaka-8, Hadi was shot and critically injured on Box Culvert Road in the capital’s Paltan area on 12 December 2025.
He sustained bullet injuries to the head and was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he underwent surgery, before being transferred to Evercare Hospital later that night.
He was admitted to Singapore General Hospital on 15 December after being flown there by air ambulance. He passed away on 18 December while undergoing treatment there.
