A case petition has been filed against National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary on charges of defamation and criminal intimidation over alleged remarks about BNP leader Mirza Abbas.
The petition was filed on Sunday by Ramna Thana BNP President Ashraful Islam in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasan Shahadat.
The plaintiff's lawyer Amirul Islam confirmed the matter.
According to the petition, Patwary allegedly made false and defamatory statements about Abbas during the campaign for the 13th parliamentary election. It further claims that after losing the election, he continued to post allegedly defamatory remarks and threats through social media platforms and online news outlets.
The complaint states that on 5 March the plaintiff noticed several Facebook posts in which Patwary allegedly made derogatory comments about Abbas. The statements later went viral on social media platforms, including Facebook and YouTube, which the petitioner claims damaged the BNP leader’s reputation.
The petition also alleges that Patwary deliberately published a series of fabricated statements on social media with the intention of tarnishing Abbas’s reputation and political career.
Mirza Abbas, a member of the BNP National Standing Committee and political adviser to the prime minister, and Patwary contested the Dhaka-8 constituency in the 12 February parliamentary election. Abbas won the seat with 56,552 votes, defeating Patwary, who secured 51,572 votes.
