Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali has assured that there is no security concern centring the Ekushey February, marking International Mother Language Day and the Martyrs’ Day.
Speaking after inspecting the central Shaheed Minar area on Friday morning (20 February), the Commissioner said that a multi-layered security arrangement has been put in place, involving around 15,000 police personnel.
In addition to regular police deployment, volunteers from other law enforcement agencies will assist to ensure order and preserve the sanctity of the Shaheed Minar.
“On this solemn day, large crowds will gather at the central Shaheed Minar to pay tribute to the language martyrs,” Sajjat Ali said. “We urge the public to respect the security measures and follow designated routes to maintain discipline and decorum.”
Highlighting the successful conduct of the recent national elections, the DMP chief said, “People exercised their voting rights in a smooth and orderly environment, with no security threats. Similarly, there is no anticipated threat for the Ekushey observances.”
He added that, alongside regular police, SWAT teams, the Dog Squad, Bomb Disposal units, and the Crime Scene Unit will remain on high alert, supported by enhanced intelligence monitoring and cyber surveillance.
On traffic management, the Commissioner advised that public entry to Shaheed Minar will be restricted to a designated route from Polashi Mor-Jagannath Hall Crossing. Exit routes will follow Romana Crossing to Doel Chattar or Chankhar Pul.
“No sharp objects, flammable materials, or explosives should be brought in. Everyone must follow the assigned routes and allow others to pay their respects in an orderly manner,” he said.
Noting that traffic diversions around Dhaka University will be in place from Friday evening for the sake of smooth movement and safety, he requested faculty, students, staff, and residents to cooperate with authorities and adhere to traffic instructions.
