Govt forms committee for family card rollout

Social Welfare Minister Dr AZM Zahid Hossain said the government has formed a committee, led by the finance minister, to implement the planned Family Card programme. The committee will submit its report within three days.

The minister shared the update with reporters on Thursday after a meeting at the Secretariat.

He said the financial assistance under the Family Card will exceed the benefits provided through existing cards and allowance programmes by more than double. However, current card and allowance schemes will continue, and authorities will distribute the new Family Card universally.

The government will deliver assistance to beneficiaries through information technology systems to ensure efficiency and transparency, he added.

Zahid described the Family Card as a new initiative by the BNP that will expand and strengthen the country’s social safety net programmes.

Meanwhile, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo said authorities plan to launch the Family Card on a trial basis before Eid-ul-Fitr.
