Law Adviser to the interim government Asif Nazrul has said that power will be handed over to the elected government by 17 or 18 February, before the start of the holy month of Ramadan.
He made the remarks on Thursday after casting his vote at the Siddheswari Girls’ College polling centre under Ramna Police Station in the Dhaka-8 constituency.
Nazrul said that for a long time, several generations in Bangladesh had been deprived of their voting rights.
He noted that young people and students had reclaimed that right through movements and sacrifices.
Describing the election as more than an ordinary vote, he said it carried the memory of those who made sacrifices in July.
Pointing to the election environment, he said voting was taking place in a festive atmosphere, although he acknowledged a few isolated incidents, which he described as part of the country’s electoral culture.
