The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has instructed that the registration of used mobile phones must be cancelled before transferring or selling them.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, the BTRC’s Spectrum Division said that the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) system was launched on 1 January to ensure transparency and security in mobile phone management in Bangladesh.
It said that with the launch of NEIR, all mobile phones currently active on the country’s networks have been automatically registered, and this system will enable effective measures to curb the use of illegal and stolen handsets.
According to the notice, when changing the SIM card of a mobile phone registered in one’s name, or when transferring or selling the phone for use by someone else, it is mandatory to deregister the device. In other words, the handset must be unregistered or released from the National ID (NID) system.
To complete the deregistration process, the last four digits of the NID or passport number used at the time of SIM purchase will be required, the BTRC said.
For more information, users can visit the BTRC website at neir.btrc.gov.bd, dial the BTRC call centre at 100, or get assistance from the nearest customer care centres of their mobile operators.
