Students have besieged top officials at Shahjalal University
of Science and Technology (SUST) and blocked a major highway in protest against
the High Court order to defer Tuesday’s student union elections.
The agitated students have padlocked the Administrative
Building, confining the vice chancellor, pro-vice chancellor, registrar and
other officials inside.
Later, around 2:20pm, the students blocked the Sylhet-Sunamganj Highway in front of the university campus.
Earlier, in the day a High Court bench suspended the central student union and hall union elections for four weeks following a writ petition filed by an independent vice president candidate. Before the HC order, the elections were slated to be held on Tuesday.
The Election Commission (EC) had allowed the election to be
held on time, but on Sunday, independent candidate Mominur Rahman Shuvo filed
the writ challenging the decision.
At SUST, students, led by Chhatra Shibir’s election panel,
and a number of other election candidates, declared Mominur “persona non-grata”
on campus.
They also protested against Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal’s (JCD) sit-in programme
in front of the EC’s head office in Dhaka, where JCD activists are calling for the withdrawal of EC
approval of SUCSU election activities.
