Despite it being the peak winter season, much of the country is not experiencing severe cold, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said, adding that the likelihood of a major cold wave for the rest of January is slim.
On Saturday, the country’s lowest temperature
was recorded at 9 degrees Celsius in Tetulia of Panchagarh.
According to meteorological standards, temperatures between 8.1 degrees Celsius and 10 degrees Celsius are considered a mild cold wave. However, the Met office does not officially declare a cold wave if such temperatures are recorded only in isolated areas.
Although three
districts in the northern region experienced a cold wave on Friday, the situation improved slightly on
Saturday.
Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque said temperatures
across the country may remain almost unchanged for the next two days.
After that, temperatures are likely to rise
gradually, he added, noting that there are no clear indications of a new cold
wave at least until 26 January.
The BMD has not yet confirmed whether cold
conditions will intensify again towards the end of the month, but if the
current warming trend continues, the chances of another cold wave in January
remain low.
